My Policeman
Bethan Roberts’s 2012 novel centres on husband and wife, Marion and Tom as the pair meet and fall in love in Brighton in the late 1950s. Patrick, a curator at Brighton Museum, also develops feelings for policeman Tom and the two begin a passionate affair, at a time when homosexuality is illegal. For a while, the threesome embrace their lives as a ménage a trois, until jealousy shatters their arrangement. My Policeman was made into a film in 2022 starring Harry Styles, Emma Corrin and David Dawson.
The novel was thoroughly researched by Bethan Roberts for historical accuracy and period detail. Early on in their relationship, Patrick is giving Marion and Tom an education in arts and culture and in the extract below he takes he takes them to the Gaeity Cinema on Lewes Road, Brighton. When The Gaeity opened in 1937, it had over 1,00 seats. It operated under that name until 1965 when it became the Ace Cinema. During the 1970s it was renamed the Vogue Cinema but closed in 1980. The building was later demolished and replaced with a new road layout, called the Vogue Gyratory.
