Jean Rhys

Good Morning, Midnight

1937 and Sasha Jansen is back in Paris for a couple of weeks after a friend has rescued her from a Bloomsbury bedsit. Alienated and lonely, she traverses the cafés and bars of Paris and kills time in afternoon cinemas.

At one point, Sasha reminisces about her marriage to Enno when, down to their last thirty francs, they were in a hotel room in Brussels where the bell of the cinema next door kept ringing.

Good Morning, Midnight was the fourth of Jean Rhys’ early novels. After its publication, she dropped from public view until the international success of her most admired novel, Wide Sargasso Sea, published in 1966.
